Dr. Kemia Sarraf founded Lodestar in 2016, specializing in trauma-responsive coaching methods for colleagues experiencing high levels of severe burnout, vicarious trauma, and moral injury. Dr. K’s program has been applied across multiple industries for both leadership training and in the creation of trauma-responsive cultures. Kemia is an authentic, compelling storyteller and a powerful keynote speaker. She is the recipient of numerous awards for her leadership and was an AMA Women Physicians Inspiration Award Honoree in 2021.
Although trauma is ubiquitous, the phenotypic expression of trauma is not always obvious. Coaches are encountering trauma-motivated behaviors regularly regardless of whether such encounters are recognized or acknowledged. Many of the typical motivators to seeking coaching (stuckness, imposter syndrome, burnout, performance improvement, bully/victim dynamics, career change/derailment, work/life balance) are rooted in some form of trauma. Experienced coaches trained and skilled in trauma-informed principles, trauma-awareness, trauma-responsive communication, and trauma-mitigation practices can engage both differently and more meaningfully. This paradigm for engagement provides clients with a richer coaching experience.

Dr. Angela Passarelli is an Associate Professor of Management at the College of Charleston, SC, and Director of Research at the Institute of Coaching, McLean/Harvard Medical School. Angela has a long-standing interest in how people, especially organizational leaders, transform as individuals and collectives to realize their full potential. This draws her to topics such as leader development, intentional change, experiential learning, emotional intelligence, organizational neuroscience, motivation, self-regulation, wellbeing, and developmental relationships. Her current research focuses on how coaching relationships support learning and behavior change throughout one’s career. In particular, she is engaged in work that examines how coaching outcomes are shaped by characteristics of the individual being coached, the interaction between the coach and coachee, and competencies of the coach.
This webinar features research that demonstrates how crafting a personal vision optimizes the brain for development and change. Anchored in Intentional Change Theory, a cornerstone of vision-based coaching is the ability to help others connect core elements of their past to their dreams and aspirations, creating an image of an ideal future that fosters hope and openness to new possibilities. This image of an ideal future, along with the positive emotions it engenders, can help to overcome inertia, motivating and sustaining individuals on a path of intentional development. Through the process of visioning, a living “statement” emerges as a tangible product of the coaching process. When the vision statement is used “first and frequently,” it promotes the joyful pursuit of goals leading to lasting change.

Call for Nominations: 2023 Board of Directors


The Nominations Committee is Chaired by the current President-Elect, Staci Witten. The Committee is forming and preparing to meet in September.

The three open 2023 board positions are President-Elect, Secretary, and Treasurer.

Eligible candidates for President-Elect must have served for at least one year as a Director on the ICF North Texas board. For the Secretary and Treasurer roles, prior experience as a chapter volunteer and/or a chapter committee member is preferred, but not required.

Any member in good standing who wants to be considered for an open board role, or wants to suggest another member for an open board role, should contact Staci at president-elect@icf-nt.com by September 10.

ICF North Texas has been pleased to host our chapter meetings and other events at Las Colinas Country Club in recent months.

ICF North Texas Board Members have shared that they have received very positive feedback. “People love seeing each other and reconnecting, and they often comment that our new space and its beautiful lighting, generous space, delicious food and wonderful service make the whole experience even better!” shared President Tim Kincaid. We hope that you will try to join us in person to see for yourself.

Member Snapshot - Amanda Panko, ACC

 

We are delighted to give you a glimpse of our member Amanda Panko, a wonderful representative of the variety of coaches we have in our ICF chapter. In addition to holding her ACC, she is a rising junior at The University of Texas at Dallas and a pre-med Biology major, looking to pursue an MD or an MD/Ph.D. in a pediatric specialty. Let’s see how coaching enriches her life and the lives of those around her.

How did your journey to coaching begin? In December 2014, Amanda began a journey seeking a diagnosis for an illness that seemed difficult to diagnose. After many conditions were ruled out, Amanda saw an expert at Harvard University’s Medical Teaching School. It was during this visit that Amanda received a diagnosis and discovered she had a one-in-a-million rare genetic disease and began to navigate her healthcare. “This is what really inspired me to become a coach,” Amanda said. “I knew pretty quickly that I wanted to work with other chronic illness patients to support them on their journey and to learn to manage their medical condition in every facet of their lives.”
Training and use of coaching: Amanda pursued her coaching training through the University of Texas at Dallas’s Executive Coaching program. Once she completed that, she soon earned her ACC. “My training has allowed me to support and encourage other patients to find their voices, and I have learned that patient advocacy is my heart’s purpose.” Amanda volunteers with patient advocacy groups like NORD (National Organization for Rare Diseases), The EveryLife Foundation, Global Genes, Texas Rare Alliance, The American Cancer Society, and Chronically Capable.

What else happened along the way? Soon Amanda returned to being a student at The University of Texas at Dallas—this time as a pre-med Biology major. “Thankfully, I have found a medication that has been a total game-changer in treating my condition and I can live a pretty normal life and keep a strong pace toward my goals.” Amanda realized she feels called to become a pediatric physician, leveraging her passion to empower patients. While she never imagined she would be pursuing a career in medicine, Amanda said, “coaching continually reminded me to look for new learning opportunities and to step out of my comfort zone.” She firmly believes that we all get to choose how we respond to challenges, and she has made it her lifelong goal to “choose resilience, determination, empowerment, and enthusiasm and give adversity in her life a double high-five right back—with a smile!”

Your niche? Career, Leadership Development/Executive, Personal/Life, Health and Wellness. I work with emerging leaders and people who have chronic illnesses. Amanda said, “What is great about young, emerging leaders is that my clients are like a blank canvas. They have an open-mindedness about their growth that is so inspirational to me!” When it comes to coaching clients with chronic illnesses, there are many benefits to showing that person how navigating work, life, and a chronic illness intertwined, and that managing stress is essential with chronic illnesses. “I think I can bring a deeper level of empathy and compassion for those who deal with chronic illnesses. Often, the time they have with me might be the only space they have to process what their condition will truly require and how they can make the tremendous life changes needed for the long term.” One thing to remember is that no matter what illness, diagnosis, or routine checkup you have, Amanda notes “we will all be patients at one point in our lives and we deserve to have our voices be heard!”

A favorite client story: I was coaching a family medicine physician who could not decide whether to take a new job offer or stay at her current job. She had already tried two other coaches for help and was feeling frustrated with herself about this decision. We took our time, and I got comfortable in the ‘stuckness’ with her. Eventually, I asked her about being a physician and her passion for her patients and that was it. Tears started to well up in her eyes and at that moment, she unlocked what was holding her back.

As a coach, it is essential to be on the journey with our clients. We can explore the deeper meaning behind seemingly insignificant things and help them discover and then remove the barrier. Next thing you know, they are moving forward—and we have given them a great gift and lasting impact. It’s no wonder we love coaching!

Why ICF and how have you gotten the most value out of your membership? When I joined our local ICF North Texas chapter, I was a new coach and wanted to network and get guidance. The community I found at both ICF Global and ICF North Texas makes it easy to access resources, get support when needed, seek guidance/mentorship, and feel supported. Some of the most valuable time has been through volunteering. I have volunteered with the Celebrate Coaching committee for two years and now serve as the project manager for this annual event.

I have also participated in our small groups (LINC) and gained extremely valuable insights. I joined the ACC LINC group because I wanted to connect with other newly certified coaches. We supported each other on our new, exciting journey. I also joined the Internal Coaches LINC group and connected with people who gave me a view of what coaching looks like inside an organization and learned from those who are already doing group coaching, team coaching, and individual coaching.

What's Next? I am working toward my application for the Green Fellowship opportunity, a joint program with UT-Dallas and UT Southwestern that introduces students to modern research techniques. If selected, I hope this experience will allow me to get a better exposure to research in an academic setting and explore an MD/Ph.D. pathway. Long term, I am interested in pediatric medical genetics, pediatric oncology, pediatric immunology, and pediatric cardiology.

Our Membership Committee is in need of numerous volunteers for the following positions:

Connections Crew – Make 10 – 12 calls a month from a provided list with names, numbers and talking points
Badge Master – Assist with compiling badge orders and work with VA who will assist in all of the mailings
LINC Liaison – Be the point of contact for LINC Group Leaders
Assistant Membership Director – Help the Director of Membership

All members would be asked to join a 30-60 virtual meeting with the director monthly.
