Our April 12 luncheon program features Sara Smith, MCC, CPCC. Sara is a long-time coach from Fort Worth, Texas. After working for IBM for nearly 30 years—seven years as an internal coach, she now has her own coaching firm, Smith Leadership. In nearly 20 years as a coach, she has honed her skills in organization effectiveness, emotional intelligent and the neuroscience of leadership. She works primarily with executives and delights in being in “ah-ha” business.

Sara will present the future of coaching and the work that ICF is doing to create that future. We will talk about what the ICF is working on to increase the visibility and understanding of coaching to the organizations across the globe. You will hear how credentialing, ethics and ICF-sponsored research help create more opportunities for us all. Find out how you can take advantage of the many ways membership offers value to you and your coaching practice. We will discuss the value of being a contributor to the success of the ICF, not just a consumer of services. There will be an opportunity to ask any questions you have about the ICF.

Metaphors are a great tool and can be one cornerstone to creating awareness—one of the most complex coaching competencies. They can also be daunting. The question is, how can I use metaphors that sound natural. I don’t want my coaching to sound clunky and made up. We will talk about the magic of metaphors and how they open up the creative parts of a client’s brain. We will talk about what makes a good metaphor and how to hear them in what our clients say. You will be given the chance to observe coaching aimed at highlighting the use of metaphor and then debrief what you heard.

International Coach Week - Volunteer Opportunities

International Coach Week (ICW) is April 29 – May 5. ICF North Texas will be coaching North Texas Food Bank employees who work within the External Affairs team. There are 40 people available for us to coach and now our job is to match each employee with a coach who is willing to do three hours of pro-bono coaching over a three-month period. This pro-bono coaching work is a part of the ICF North Texas ICW initiative, which celebrates coaching globally while providing coaching to organizations that otherwise may not be able to invest in it.

The Commitment: Coaches must be:

  • Members of ICF North Texas
  • Certified (you must have completed a coach training program but you do not have to be credentialed)
  • Able to conduct three coaching sessions with employees of the North Texas Food Bank from June through August. These sessions would be scheduled by the coach and coachee.

The coaches will also be invited to a kick-off session to further orient them to our efforts with the North Texas Food Bank and their role in supporting employees with coaching. The date for this session is not set yet but will be sometime in May.

We would like to have all coaches identified by April 24. You may sign up here. Note that you must be logged in as a member to volunteer for this activity.

ICF North Texas Named 2018 Honoree in ICF Global Chapter Recognition Program

The International Coach Federation (ICF) recognizes and annually honors its individual members, chapters, and organizations that have demonstrated a remarkable commitment to advancing the art, science and practice of professional coaching in their communities and beyond. For 2018, ICF North Texas was named one of 13 esteemed chapters to be named an honoree for the Chapter Recognition Award.

This award is given in recognition of chapters that:

  • Create an attractive, credible presence and voice for professional coaching in its local community.
  • Exhibit qualities of a high-performing chapter (namely, agility, adaptability, accountability, sustainability, caring, innovation and relevance).
  • Create sustainable governance.
  • Ensure financial viability.
  • Define and manages culture.
  • Ensure infrastructure.

We are proud to be named along with 12 other chapters (out of a total of 133). Chapters recognized for 2018 are:

  • ICF Australasia
  • ICF Cleveland
  • ICF Connecticut
  • ICF Egypt
  • ICF France
  • ICF Hong Kong
  • ICF Kenya
  • ICF Luxembourg
  • ICF New York City
  • ICF North Texas
  • ICF Switzerland
  • ICF Toronto
  • ICF United Kingdom

You can see our 2018 highlights represented here (link to infographic). While we celebrate our notable accomplishments from last year, we must not forget that this award reflects the spirit in which they were achieved. In 2017, the ICF NT Board of Directors created a set of values to guide the work of our chapter. Those values include: Authenticity, Excellence, Innovation, Abundance and Community. In 2018, the chapter demonstrated all of these values in various ways but we especially focused on Abundance and Community. These values are based on the idea that when one of us benefits, we all benefit. When one of us gets to know another one of us, the connection can benefit both people—on so many levels.

We look forward to celebrating this award throughout the year with our members and look forward to growing our base of coaches who want to be a part of a truly special group of professionals.

Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 7 - 13
